HK Cinema - 1997

HK reverts back to Chinese rule.  The tension and fear in the HK film industry was tremendous in the years leading up to the handover. Though China had promised a policy of non-intervention, many filmmakers and actors had little faith that this would be the case. Would censorship come into play, would certain subjects be forbidden, would the HK film industry cease to exist?

These were all questions that were debated and alluded to over the years in articles and in films. Some people such as John Woo and Chow Yun Fat feared the worst and made plans to work elsewhere.  So far it appears that in fact the Chinese are keeping their word and have allowed the film industry complete freedom.
