Sammo put together a crew of actors who went on
to make one of the most popular series of the 1980’s – The Lucky Star series.
The formula he creates in Winners and Sinners basically repeats itself
in the sequels. Sammo, Charlie Chin, John Shum, Stanley Fung and Richard
Ng play low life crooks and conmen who constantly get in and out of trouble.
The films are played mainly for humor – often
very adolescent, as there is always a girl that all five are trying to
court in the most juvenile manner imaginable – but Sammo provides some
often brilliant action sequences. Jackie and Yuen Biao show up in a few
of these films.
Some of the other titles are My Lucky Stars (1985),
Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars (1985) and Lucky Stars Go Places (1986), Return
of the Lucky Stars (1989, Ghost Punting (1992), How to Meet the Lucky Stars
(1996).
