Aka - White Lotus Trio
Parts of this are fairly decent, in particular the action choreography from
Chui Fat who was responsible for that duty on a number of films - Devil Hunters,
Crystal Hunt, The Holly Virgin vs The Evil Dead, Cheetah on Fire, Killer
Angels and others. But the film is kind of a mess and at times nearly incoherent
as it jumps around like ants on a hot stove. I would put that on the female
director Yuen Qiu, who only has this credit as a director. If you were to
look at some of the cast members, you might think this film was from the
1970s - Gordon Liu Chia-hui, Leung Kar-yan, Lily Li, Walter Tso, Siu Yam
Yam aka Yum Yum Shaw and a number of other older veterans. These are
not the main players though you might wish it was. Instead it is a few actors
who are supposed to be 18 years old or so but look to be in their 30's.
Three husbands to three pregnant wives (Yum Yum, Kingdom Yuen and Yu Feng)
decide to steal money from a triad head (Walter Tso playing a villain
for a change) to take care of the soon to arrive babies. They execute this
pretty well with the use of colored tear gas and go home happy men. Not for
long as Tso sends a man to kill them. The three wives witness this and say
they will get their revenge - in 18 years when their children are of age.
I prefer Widow Warriors - don't leave it up to your children. So the film
jumps 18 years and I keep waiting for these children to show up. Eventually
they do but like I said nowhere close to 18 - them being Lau Siu-kwan (30
years old), Teddy Lin (30 year old) and Elaine Chow (27 years old). So what
have you three been doing for the past 10-12 years? Well, two of them became
crooks and one a cop.
But much of the film has nothing to do with them. It is a triad tale. Walter
Tso, Leung Kar-yan and another fellow are part of a syndicate and when Leung
tells the others that he wants to get into selling illegal weapons, Tso says
no and if they proceed he will tell the police. He is later attacked by one
of the Avenging Trio but he thinks it was by the syndicate and so he strikes
back. The cops - Gordon and Lily - are after them all. So there is a solid
chunk of action and the film goes all over the place adding little to the
film. Still nice to see old warhorses like Leung and Gordon in a tussle.
And a squad that is almost all female take on the bad guys.
