This mediocre Taiwanese thriller was released
three years after its production date and that rarely is a good sign. Still,
the title Underground Warfare pulled me in and for some reason, I stuck with
it till the end. I kept thinking Dick Wei who has a small fight in the first
scene would return for some more action, but he wisely stayed away. Other
than Wei, the film also has two Shaw veterans, Ku Feng and Chan Sing as triad
heads, but they only show up for the paycheck. Damn, little happens until
a shootout at the end.
Ing (Lin Pei-jun) gets out of jail after
a three year stint for stealing jewels. She claims innocence but the cops
(Michael Tong) and the triads keep an eye on her. For pretty much the whole
movie. We get to keep our eye on her while she showers, visits the graves
of her husband and child, sits around and cries, meets an old friend and
eats. All very exciting. The cop falls in love with her of course and after
the shower scene, I don't blame him. Chan Sing has a female enforcer (Tao
Zhong-zi) who is fairly impressive in her scenes, but this seems to be her
only credit. Another obscure VCD down.
