Aka Miss Danger
It seems that Mainland China after first
being inspired by Hong Kong films in the wuxia genre and then police action
films have now set their eyes on Girls with Guns. By inspired, I of course
mean copy. By copy, I mean steal. Since I am a rabid fan of Girls with Guns,
this could still be good news. There are as best as I can tell a number of
these slick female action flicks with titles like Queen of Triads, Action
Team Overlord Flower, Wild Agent and Wild Agent 2. Raquel Xu Dong-dong is
the star in many of these. The Mainland streaming giant IQIYI is producing
many of them along with Korean and Japanese content. They were booted out
of Taiwan for basically being Mainland agents which certainly makes me leery
of subscribing to their service.
Now when I say Girls with Guns, I don't
mean the Golden Age of Moon, Yukari, Michiko and Kara. Think more the New
Age period of films such as Martial Angels, Cop Shop Babes and Naked Killers.
Great eye candy with action that is highly stylized, rapidly edited and wire
enhanced. Fun to watch, but don't go looking for any true martial arts. Finding
a shirt in your closet would have more. But at least those Hong Kong films
had a plot you could follow. This film is totally incoherent and incomprehensible
and I had only a vague idea what was going on. Not that the mis-timed subs
helped but not sure how much they hurt. Still due to my weak character, I
watched till the end because it is bright, colorful, filled with the beforehand
mentioned eye candy, a few decent action scenes and it is shot in Thailand.
A bunch of the killings actually take place on the BTS walkways.
Let me try to make a muddle of the mess.
ATO is a secret Chinese spy agency and they are trying to bring down M Corporation,
a global organization trafficking in women and organs. In the opening scene
four lovely women disguised as escorts are to take out three of the leaders.
Sword wielding twins, a newbie and the leader, Ya Mei (Xu). Some flashy action
follows - dodging bullets and slo-mo somersaults sort of thing - but when
the whole place blows up only Ya Mei escapes as she outruns a CGI fireball
- or so she thinks. She leaves ATO and three years later is to marry a nice
man who thinks she is a dance instructor. Her fiancé is kidnapped
and on her own she decides to destroy M. This takes her to Pattaya, Bangkok
and a Thai island. But much of it was indecipherable and the ending in particular
was a complete puzzle to me, but I will take my female action films however
they come in colors. Directed by Zheng Li aka Jenny Ceng. 85 minutes.
