Way of the Black Dragon
Director: Chan Chue
Year: 1978
Rating: 3.0
There are times
when I think I could have been a director. I am sure I could direct a film
as inept as this one is. It would not be easy but if I drank a lot it might
help. There is so much bad in this film. Just the basic stuff like making
sense, continuity, editing and so on. But there is some talent on the action
side. Ron Van Clief is back in Hong Kong after The Black Dragon's Revenge
in 1975, Carter Huang has some solid time, the big TVB star Cecilia Wong
is the lady in distress (though being married to Natalis Chan in real life
has to be worse) and there are a few other familiar faces from Hong Kong.
Choreographing it all is Billy Chan.
The first half is cringe worthy. Vile. In
Bangkok women are being kidnapped and sent to Hong Kong with drugs up their
privates and employment in a seedy brothel. The women are brutalized and
raped. But weirdly two prolific character actors are heading it - Fung Ging-man
and Ho Pak-kwong. Very strange seeing them as heinous villains. I would have
ducked out of this, but I knew Huang and Van Clief were going to show up
eventually
One of the women kidnapped is Cecilia and
they decide to sell her to a customer for HKD 20,000. The happy buyer is
Huang! And she is thrilled. Ok. Getting creepier. When one of the women is
murdered, the Black Dragon enters the film as an Agent of some kind. The
minions come after him. Two of them are Mang Hoi and Peter Chan Lung. Later
to be part of Sammo's team. Watching RVC throw the small Mang Hoi around
was cruel. But fun. Cecilia, Huang and RVC all end up back in Bangkok and
much action follows. The best fight though is between RVC and Huang before
they realize they are on the same side. It is kind of a shame that the very
talented RVC was in such crap in Hong Kong films. Seeing him go up against
some real talent like Lo Lieh or Jimmy Wang-yu would have been fun.
