Doctor Vampire
Director: Jamie Luk
Year: 1990
Rating: 5.5
Remind me
not to check into a hospital in Hong Kong. The supervisor (James Wong) has
told his doctors to generate more income with unneeded operations. Poor Shing
Fui-on is circumcised for a cold and has his appendix removed for a headache.
Then in the crazy finale that takes place in the hospital, there are no other
staff or patients to be seen. But this isn't a critique of health care in
Hong Kong. It is a vampire movie. Not a traditional hopping Jianshi, but
a Western vampire. Probably not coincidenally, earlier in the year A Bite
of Love also with a Western styled vampire was released. That one had a lot
of action and some comedy, this one is mainly comedy until the final 20 minutes
when it goes all action.
This isn't a cast that will get most viewers
excited. All character actors but with two of my favorite actresses. The
stunning Ellen Chan but a few years before her Cat III days and the elastic
face of Sheila Chan. There are some amusing moments in the film but it falls
into that Hong Kong comedy category of lots of cheap sex jokes, scared faces,
frantic chases and chaos. We have been here before. This can usually be forgiven
for some great physical stunts, but they save all that till the end.
Bowie Lam (not the most charismatic of actors)
is in England (where A Bite of Love began) on a medical conference. His car
breaks down in the countryside and he walks to a castle. Some castle. There
are women all over cavorting with men. Lucky Bowie. Except the women are
all vampires and the men their meal. He doesn't figure it out and so when
he sees a man trying to save himself, he thinks the man is trying to rape
the woman and he saves her. The beautiful Ellen Chan. By morning, he is no
longer a virgin and has been bitten. Somewhere below the waist. He returns
to Hong Kong but soon the sun is hurting his eyes, blood looks attractive
and he wakes up on the ceiling.
His two friends and fellow doctors (David
Wu, Lawrence Lau) and his girlfriend (Shiela Chan) and her friend (Crystal
Kwok) know something is up. Then Ellen tracks him down. Her Master (Peter
Kjaer) has sent her to bring him back because his blood is so tasty. Chinese
blood. And then he shows up and the fun begins. Directed by Jamie Luk who
directed Robotrix next and with cameos from Helen Law Lan and the prolific
novelist and script writer (over two films) Ni Kuang as the Tai Chi priest.
