Talk about the sum of the pieces not equaling
the total. A pair of oversized ears, an awkward nose and crooked front
teeth somehow all magically come together in the wonderful face of Charlie
Yeung. In the time that it takes most actors to learn their lines, this
very appealing actress was absolutely huge. In her first year on the scene,
she appeared in Ashes of Time, The Lovers, What Price Survival and Love
in the Time of Twilight. Not a bad career for most actors. She was the
"It Girl", the next superstar with an unlimited future - and then
suddenly she had had enough of that life and retired in 1997. She has returned
to Hong Kong film, but during the years in which she was away Hong Kong
film has gone into a steep decline and good roles for women a scarcity
- thus her comeback hasn't really generated much excitement.
