Superhero
films have gone global. Every country wants their own and why not. Under
the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe banner in Indonesia, they have produced
four super hero films with plans for four more. They are based on Bumilangit
comics that go back to the 1940s. This one based on a character begun in
1954. I had no idea that Indonesia had a large comic book industry. Kind
of cool. This one was rather fun if a bit long at 135 minutes with a fair
amount of action and more special effects than I prefer. But both the action
and fx are well done. This with a budget of $1.2 million. The action was
choreographed by the Uwais Team, but don't expect The Raid. It is solid,
but not brutal or ferocious.
Alana (Pevita Pearce) is born prematurely
during a volcanic explosion that kills her parents. She is brought up in
an orphanage with a reputation of a fierce disposition and defender of the
weaker children. She is adopted by a wealthy woman who teaches her how to
fight. Cage fights. She is challenged by the nasty son of a wealthy man.
She beats his ass and that sets off a series of actions that will allow her
to discover who she really is. Sri Asih. The reincarnation of a woman who
had super powers. And she begins to gain them as well. Sort of on par with
Wonder Woman even to the wrist bands deflecting bullets. She will need those
powers to stop a supernatural malignant being from sacrificing 1,000 people.
Pevita Pearce is a top actress in Indonesia, but I assume she is not a trained
martial artist. Still, she makes it look like she does. Good enough to look
for their other super hero films. There was actually a version of Sri Ashi
made back in 1954 but it seems to be lost.
