Aka - Une vie de chat

Watched in French with subs - but there is also an English dub. Perfect for children. I think.

This French animated film is a total charmer. Delightful in every aspect. The hand-drawn animation is beautiful - it reminded me in some ways of being influenced by Modigliani for the people and Chagall in the rich coloring. There are frames of Paris from the rooftops that are stunning in the detail. On top of this, it is a fine at times funny crime story. The creators behind this are Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol and it was nominated for an Academy Award. It comes in at 70-minutes.

Dino leads a double-life. A stay at home during the day; a partner in crime at night. Dino is a cat. A black cat with orange stripes. In the daytime it curls up with Zoe, a small girl who has become mute since her policeman father was murdered by the villainous Costa. Her mother is also a cop and has sworn vengeance. It all works out. At night the cat goes with the acrobatic Nico, a cat burglar who can cross the roofs of Paris like a . . .   cat. Dino likes going with him. One evening out of curiosity Zoe follows Dino for as long as she can - but then overhears Costa with his gang planning a robbery. They see her, she runs into Nico's apartment and he comes to her rescue and the chase is on all over Paris ending up on Notre Dame. I just loved the animation.
