I don't think I even knew there was a fourth
Transporter in the series. And I am pretty sure if I did, I never saw it.
I think I would have remembered the three blondes if not all the car crashes.
Apparently, Statham was offered three more Transporter films, but they could
not meet his money demands. Probably a good thing for him. Not so good for
the producers as this was the end of the line for The Transporter. There
had also been a TV show in 2012 that didn't last long but I thought it was
ok. There is something about fast cars and the Riviera that I like watching.
This was shot in France and I wish I was there. With a huge yacht and a very
hot girlfriend. And 100 million dollars in the bank. This has all the standard
Transporter material. The manic chases, cars flipping over like pancakes
on the griddle, some beat downs, pretty girls, the Transporter smug confidence,
the rules - but it doesn't really work. Too paper cutter.
The main problem of course is that Ed Skrein
is no Jason Statham. That isn't his fault, but he never feels authentic in
this role. Too pretty, too fashion modelish, the three-day stubble firmly
in place, his fight scenes are overly edited to help him - in real life he
looks like he would have trouble fending off an aggressive group of Girl
Scouts selling cookies. Now for all I know, he is a martial arts master,
but it doesn't show. The other problem is they bring in the Transporter's
father. Who keeps getting kidnapped. Such a dumb idea. Guys like The Transporter
don't have father's. They were left on the doorstep of an orphanage as babies
and had to fight to survive. The father is played by Ray Stevenson which
is always a good thing. He brings some ruffled charm to his role but the
banter between father and son is painful.
Unknowingly, the Transporter is hired by
a female (Loan Chabanol) as a get-away driver in a bank heist. His packages
are two other female robbers - all three in blonde wigs. All good looking
but then they were in the escort business working for a swine. Now it is
time for their payback - steal everything he has in a series of thefts. They
kidnap dad to make sure the Transporter stays with their plan. The
film to its credit doesn't waste much time on drama or romance - other than
the requisite hoedown between the Transporter and the main girl and dad with
two of the others. Lucky Stevenson.
