A personal, easy going, gossipy documentary on
Roger Moore. Sort of like he is or at least the person he invented. Brought
up in the working class, he invented the urbane, well-spoken upper class
Moore and eventually became that person. His first two marriages were to
women much older than he was and they brought him along. Introduced him to
the top shelf people, taught him how to present himself and the second wife
took him to Hollywood to start acting.
It didn't work out and back to England he
went into TV hell, a couple series that no one has ever heard of. Then The
Saint. I love The Saint, own all the TV episodes and still watch one on occasion.
The Saint made him. In an interview he is asked how he got it. "Because Sean
Connery was busy". And then Bond. After the Saint it was fitting though in
truth I have never warmed up to his Bond films. Not because of him but because
they just got cornier and cheesier. And time only hurts them.
That is as far in his career as the film
goes. It is almost secondary to him. His charm, sense of humor and good friendships.
Lots of clips of home movies and people saying great things about him. The
oddest thing about the film is that it seems Moore is narrating the film
to us. Years after his death. But it is actually Steve Coogan trying to imitate
Moore but sounding more like George Lazenby to my ears. It is not a deep
film, it doesn't really try to be. He had a wonderful life is the only message
and what could be better.
