In 1968 the producers
of The Saint had put a two-parter together and released it into theaters.
That was The Fiction-Makers. I guess it did well enough to do it again with
this two-parter. Hard to imagine now that people would pay to see a TV show
in the theater but back then a lot of people had no access to see the show
and once it was aired, it was gone. No video rental stores back then.
At least it is a decent show with some nice Italian locales, bright color
and Simon Templar at his most chivalrous. This was the final year of
the show and Roger Moore would go on to another TV show, The Persuaders,
before he would become Bond in Live and Let Die. Does anyone remember him
for his appearances on the Western TV show, Maverick, as Beauregarde Maverick
in 14 episodes back in 1959? Me neither.
Trouble always finds Templar. This time
sitting at a bar in Naples. The man sitting on the next bar stool sees an
old friend and goes up to him to say hello but is told he has the wrong man.
An hour later he is dead. Templar is curious and starts to dig about. This
being Italy the man (Ian Hendry) is of course Mafia and has a few secrets
to keep. Templar wants to uncover them and they needless to say keep trying
to kill him. No romance for the Saint in this one though there
are two attractive women in it - the moll of the mobster (Aimi MacDonald)
and the mobster's niece (Rosemary Dexter), two names to get no one into the
theater. 95 minutes and Templar comes out unscathed with barely a hair out
of place.
