The One

When I decided to re-watch all these Jet Li films made in the West after about two decades, I recalled there was one that really stunk up the place. This is the One.  Evacuate the building. Or the Universe for that matter. Seeing the word Multiverse being used almost made me wretch. Enough with the frigging Multiverse. Such a stupid idea and now way overused. Not so much when this film was made. This is just a really dumb film that makes less sense than a politician trying to explain what he was doing with his pants down in a McDonalds buying a Big Mac. This was initially suppose to star The Rock and this is definitely more suited towards him but I guess he figured The Mummy Returns was more believable. So this is Jet's fourth entry in the West coming after Kiss of the Dragon. Maybe there is a kernel of a good sci-fi idea in here somewhere but the filmmakers are in too much of a rush to explore it. Hey, the audience are idiots, we don't have to explain this. Well, the film didn't do very well and was badly spanked by critics so maybe we are smarter than they gave us credit for. Or not. Hey, I watch Jungle Jim movies so what do I know.

Let's see if I got this right. There are 124 parallel universes in which each of us shows up in each one at the same time. What a ghastly idea except in the case of Carla Gugino who I would be happy to visit in all of them. I want to be in the Universe in which Gore won - as shown on TV - no Iraq War and taking Climate Change seriously. In another Universe George Bush is pushing for Universal Healthcare. Now that's crazy. We are all connected across these universes and so when Yulaw (Jet Li # 1) realizes that by killing one of him in another universe he takes their energy and becomes stronger. In fact, all the rest get stronger. He was part of the Universe Police Force to stop travelling unlawfully between universes without a passport. Or ICE. So he begins killing them all and gaining strength and doing a cheer every time he kills one as if he scored a touchdown. He hopes that he will become a God when he kills the other 123. All in all I would rather be with Carla. Only one is left. But a question remains for me - if there are 124 of us and when one dies we split his force - then why don't we get stronger when they begin to die naturally. Definitely not working with me.

The last one left is Gabe (Jet Li # 2) who is a cop and married to Carla - one of the Carla's. He has noticed that he is getting stronger and wonders why. So has Carla and she is damn tired. Two other Universe cops are trying to stop Jet Li #1 but the trick is they can't kill him because then Gabe will maybe perhaps possibly become God and though he seems to be a nice guy you never know what turning into God will do to you. I would make sure the Red Sox won the World Series every year if I was God. So Yulaw tries to kill Gabe, the two cops (oh by the way played by Delroy Lindo and Jason Statham when he still had hair) try and stop him and Gabe tries to persuade people that there is this other guy from another universe who looks just like him with super powers. You can imagine how that goes. Once again Jet brings in Corey Yuen to do the choreography but it is a really mixed bag. He uses wire-work excessively, imitates The Matrix at times and the only good opponent that Jet fights is . . . Jet Li. They do a nice job of having them fight each other. But still.
