The Truth About Murder

Director: Lew Landers
Year: 1946
Rating: 5.0

Nancy Drew grows up and is on the heels of another killer in this RKO B. Not Nancy Drew exactly but starring Bonita Granville who played Nancy as a teenage actor in a series of four films. As a warning women may find this film objectionable! She works in the D.A. office as an assistant to her boss played by Morgan Conway. They are romancing one another. She is 23 and he is 43 (in real life). He is holding her back in her career because he wants her to quit and be a good wife and have babies. After solving the murder and nearly getting killed he asks her if she wants to prosecute the murderer - her answer is the only thing I want to prosecute is breakfast for my husband. And there goes women's lib down the drain!

To teach him a lesson she joins the law firm of a friend who has been in the drunk tank for months because of problems with his wife. When the wife is murdered he is arrested and has a complete blank about that night. So Granville begins snooping around which gets her involved with gangsters and another murder. A big part of the film is the use of a lie detector machine which she operates - with a whole lot of straps to measure heart, blood pressure and sweat. The D.A. is played by Morgan Conway - Dick Tracy in a bunch of films. I would pay for a voice like his - straightforward, factual and deep but not too deep. Once again I bump into Rita Corday who plays a model and suspect. It feels like I am stalking her. The gangster is Gerald Mohr who was the Lone Wolf a few times but always makes me feel like I need a shower after watching him. Lew Landers directs. Basic B film material. The cast is a plus.
