I am not sure a liberal like me should be
watching a film starring Gina Carano after a few dumb-ass comments she said.
I hope I don’t lose my credentials. People say stupid shit in their life
– I know I have – but kicking her off The Mandalorian seems a bit extreme.
I guess that is our society now. On both sides. I liked her in Haywire and
I liked her in this. And I liked her in The Mandalorian which I just finished
watching tonight. Damn, I wasn’t expecting him to show up but how perfect
was that. I like female kick-ass films – who knows why – maybe my analyst
would if I had one. And she is the real deal having won all these women fighting
titles. Her moves come from her experience. So watching her deliver the goods
is a pleasure. She does a lot of delivering in this film. Fed Ex.
She plays Ava – brought up by a sweetheart of a father who taught her to
take pain and to give it. Something every girl should learn how to do. In
the opening scene as a young girl she has to kill two guys who broke into
their house. But over a decade later she gets married to a real nice guy
and they go off on their honeymoon to some Caribbean paradise where the drinks
are cold and the sands are warm. But the husband has a bad accident and is
taken away by an ambulance – and disappears. His father (Treat Williams)
comes down and blames her. The cop (Luis Guzman) also suspects her and is
no help. After she treats a few guys rough to get answers, they deport her
– she tells the cop “You have to understand, there is nothing I won’t do
to get my husband back. Nothing.” Many dead bodies later we believe her.
My kind of girl. They take your husband, you take their lives. A fair amount
of violence and action. Nothing graceful – just hard hitting. It was shot
in Puerto Rico though in theory it does not take place on that island. Not
exactly a tourist brochure. A lot of gritty grungy slums and if you go into
a night club someone who looks just like Danny Trejo is going to want to
dance with your woman. Don't say no unless your woman is Gina Carano.
