For a Beatles
fan like me this was pure joy and fun - but thankfully I wasn't the protagonist
in the film. I have likely heard every Beatles song hundreds if not thousands
of time, but I can't sing a single Beatle song all the way through on my
own. I would be racking my brain but the best I could do would be:
Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far
away
Something something here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Second verse same as the first
Or one of my favorite oldies:
She was just nineteen (more politically
correct)
You know what I mean
And the way she looked was way beyond compare
Pom Poom pom pom pom pom pom.
A few other things disappear from memory
as well - Coke, cigarettes, Harry Potter and as an inside joke Oasis. But
the truth of the matter is that it wouldn't just be Oasis. It would be everything
that came after the Beatles. Nothing would be the same in popular music.
The Rolling Stones would still be doing blues covers, Led Zep would still
be ripping off the blues but louder, Pet Sounds? Gone. The Mersey Sound?
Never would have happened. It is actually fascinating to think what our current
musical scene would be like if the Beatles had never existed - very different.
They wrote songs like A Day in the Life, Strawberry Fields, Lucy in the Sky,
Norwegian Wood, Penny Lane that absolutely no one else could have written
and they changed the face of music.
Their last album was 50 years ago but their
influence is still driving music though people may not even be aware of it.
Kids should understand that. Musical progress is a train of artists building
on what came before them - as did The Beatles of course but they shifted
it where is wasn't going to go otherwise. It is also interesting to speculate
that if the music of the Beatles was actually introduced into today's music
scene as is the premise of the film - would anyone notice? Has music moved
so much that it would just sound irrelevant and hokey? I Wanna Hold
Your Hand? Maybe.
Not that anyone asked but if I had to make
my double album as does the main character - 10 songs on each CD - this is
what I would have put out. In no particular order.
1. A Day in the Life
2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
