King of the Zombies

Director: Jean Yarbrough
Year: 1941
Rating: 5.5

This Monogram film isn't too bad considering the budget and its B film ambitions. It is a horror-comedy film with all of the humor being delivered by Mantan Moreland. Yes, I know Moreland was part of the racially stereotyped black comedians of that period but he is actually very funny throwing out one-liners like an assembly line. He was one of Monogram's most popular stars. He was also in a number of Charlie Chan films and always a welcome presence. He gets a lot of time in this film and is really the prime reason to watch it.

A pilot is flying Dick Purcell (the future Captain America) and his manservant Moreland to Panama when their plane goes down on a strange island. There is come crazy Austrian who maintains a house and a staff of zombies. All sorts of things begin to happen. With a bigger budget this could have been much better but it still creates some spooky surroundings - one thing low budget films did well. It is directed by a solid B horror filmmaker - Jean Yarbrough - who also helmed The Devil Bat with Lugosi, The She-Wolf of London, The Brute Man, The Creeper and about a zillion other films of all kinds.
