AKA - Madame Pimpernel
This is at times a bit flat and slow but the rousing ending makes it overall
an enjoyable little film. Produced by and starring Constance Bennett, it
was released a month after the war with Germany had ended in 1945. Bennett
(sister of Joan Bennett) and Gracie Field (who at one time was the highest
paid entertainer in England) are stuck in Paris after the Germans take the
city. Rather than leaving they decide to stay behind and smuggle out Allied
flyers who have been shot down. Until the end it is fairly tension free but
the ladies have great chemistry and are a pleasure to watch. Kurt Kreuger
who over his acting career played loads of German officers or Nazi's gets
the role of the swine Gestapo agent. Interesting in that Kreuger was in fact
German but had moved to the USA not for political reasons but for acting
ambitions.
