They Came to Blow
Up America
Director: Edward Ludwig
Year: 1943
Rating: 6.0
Solid enjoyable B film that they made in 1943 during the war with the usual
propaganda trappings. For some reason they give away a huge spoiler within
the first few minutes that takes a lot of the suspense out of the film. George
Sanders though is always a pleasure to watch whether he plays villain or
hero - in this case the hero. He is a German-American working with the FBI
and goes underground as a Nazi in Germany to nab a group of saboteurs coming
to blow up things in the USA. Ward Bond plays his boss and Sig Ruman a family
friend. The role suits Bond well and after the war he along with John Wayne
became two of the most anti-Communist actors in Hollywood and helped HUAC
unearth Communist sympathizers. Not a cool thing to have done to your fellow
actors.
