On February 9, 1964 Beatlemania officially took off in the United States
when the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. If you are old enough
as I am, you probably can recall just what a huge event it was at the time.
Everybody was talking about the Beatles - parents generally making fun of
them, teens and younger just absorbed by what was going on. I doubt if there
has been a comparable frenzy for a rock band since. 73 million people tuned
in that night to watch them begin with All My Loving and get through Till
There Was You, She Loves You, I Saw Her Standing There and finishing with
I Wanna Hold Your Hand. It was the beginning of a new era in music and culture.
This film is a charming, sweet teen ode to that night. Three girls from New
Jersey decide it is there mission in life to go see the Beatles - breaking
into the hotel where they were staying, hiding under beds, getting stuck
in elevators, being chased by the police and various other roadblocks to
stop them - but these are determined girls. The three young actresses all
went on to solid careers - Nancy Allen appeared in two great Brian De Palma
films, Theresa Saldana is the wife in Raging Bull and Wendy Jo Sperber went
on to a TV career - best known in Bosum Buddies - but died fairly young at
47. This was also Robert Zemeckis's first film but he was to go on to fame
with Romancing the Stone and Back to the Future.
