Director: George Axelrod
Year: 1966
Rating: 6.5
This is one of the oddest films I have seen for a while. It is hard to imagine
anything like this being made today or really back In the 1960's. Roddy McDowell
plays a high school senior though he is in every way much too old for the
role and Tuesday Weld is also a high school senior who is way too sexy for
a virgin. It is a truly schizophrenic film that swings back and forth between
corny beach blanket comedy and total dark obsessive creepiness - it could
have gone either way but can't make up its mind. Roddy is an amoral psychopath
obsessed over Tuesday Weld which is easy to understand but seemingly not
in a sexual way which is very hard to understand. He just wants to make her
wishes come true like a Genie and as her aspirations increase so does his
lunacy and his willingness to do anything, even murder. The near incestuous
scene with the cashmere sweaters and her father is so bizarre you wonder
what the hell the director was thinking. Also starring Lola Albright, Harvey
Korman and Ruth Gordon.
